Interior design of an art gallery, a system of zero volume furnitures
MEGA is a 15 square metre space, a place where to show and develop unseen and cross-dishiplinary projects between art, architecture, design, music, photography, publishing and cinema. An Essential showcase, facing piazza Vetra, with the aim to become a sort of active laboratory and residency for new artistic practices, we developed the gallery's setup from the idea to design a series of light and threadlike furniture and a staircase.
The exhibition space, ironically in relation to the name, is actually tiny, just a few square metres, with a mezzanine with a window facing the street
Those objects integrate into the exhibition/workshop space without subtract light and occupy volumes. They are made of slight metal structure and wooden planes. The staircase can be removed to completely take advantage of the exhibition space. Hanged outside on the nearby fence park, it becomes a cocktail and beers holder during openings.
Our design develops within this space through a very clear strategy, that is, trying to make the objects necessary for the gallery almost invisible, "rerefacted" objects that we could define as having zero volume. The objects we have created are a radiator and mobile entrance cover to the gallery, 2 elements located above the mezzanine which are the bases of the desks/office area
The element that makes the space dynamic, usable and that makes it somehow functional is a ladder that can be positioned in several points in the space, used to climb onto the mezzanine but also to then place illustrative material relating to the gallery's activities and if necessary it can also be removed, allowing full use of the space on the ground floor, a very useful function is also that it is a useful object for placing beers during opening events on the railing of the park in front
The various objects were made with 8mm thick metal rods welded and then waxed, while the support surfaces were made of plywood covered in white laminate
The staircase has been imagined as a super object with special powers. In addition to being able to move to allow the gallery to function, it is also a convenient object that can be leaned against the railing of the park in front of the gallery, to rest beers during the opening or to become a seat.
